Merrimac Police Investigating After Driver Flees Traffic Stop and Crashes in Haverhill

MERRIMAC — Chief Eric M. Shears reports that the Merrimac Police Department is among several agencies investigating after a vehicle pursuit that began in Merrimac ended in a crash in Haverhill.

At approximately 4:05 p.m., Saturdaya Merrimac police officer stopped a vehicle in the area of 100 West Main St. for allegedly driving with an expired New Hampshire registration. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped off and the officer returned to his car and attempted to catch the vehicle as it fled onto Route 110 into Haverhill.

The officer was unable to catch up to the suspect, who was driving at a high rate of speed, until he rounded a corner and found that the suspect’s vehicle had crashed into a telephone pole on Atwood Road in Haverhill. Upon his arrival, the officer immediately called for medical aid and assisted with treating the driver.

The suspect, who is not being named at this time, suffered serious injuries and was transported via MedFlight to a Boston area hospital.

The Merrimac Police, Haverhill Police, Massachusetts State Police (MSP), and MSP Accident Reconstruction Team are currently investigating.
