Larry Fisher Appointed Merrimac Fire Chief

MERRIMAC — The Merrimac Fire Department is pleased to announce that Larry Fisher has been appointed as chief.

Fisher, who has been a member of the Merrimac Fire Department since 1980, was sworn in as chief during a ceremony on June 25. He replaces former Chief Ralph Spencer, who retired.

“I have spent my entire career at the Merrimac Fire Department and I am excited to continue serving this community as chief,” Fisher said. “It’s an honor to lead this department and I look forward to continuing and expanding upon the work we do every day.”

Over the last 38 years, Chief Fisher has worked his way up the ranks, becoming a lieutenant in 1987, a captain in 1999 and deputy chief in 2000 — a position he remained in until being appointed chief.

In his role as deputy chief, Fisher served as the operations chief during emergency management situations, the public information officer at fire scenes and as the department’s fire investigator to determine the cause and origin of all fires in town.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Chief Fisher over the years on operations and incidents that have involved both the police and fire departments,” Police Chief Eric Shears said. “Chief Fisher is the ideal person to fill the role of chief given his extensive knowledge of the department and community.”

While serving the Merrimac Fire Department, Chief Fisher also operated his own business, Larry S. Fisher Electric, which he opened in 1984. Since then, he has been contracted by numerous municipalities and organizations, including the Department of Fire Services and the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations.
