MERRIMAC– Chief Eric M. Shears proudly shares that quick thinking and action by Officer Paul DeCoste and Adam White ensured the safety of a Merrimac resident during a house fire.

On Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 5:38 a.m., the two officers responded to a report of a house fire after Merrimac resident Jeff Strogney was driving by a home and immediately called 911 upon seeing smoke.

Upon arrival, Officers DeCoste and White were met with heavy smoke and fire coming from the residence. They initially attempted to enter through the front door, but were forced back by thick smoke.

Determined to check for occupants, they quickly moved to another entrance, where Officer DeCoste kicked the door open, allowing both officers to enter the home. At the time, responders had reason to believe there could be as many as four people in the residence.

The officers searched the residence and located a woman asleep in her bedroom. They woke the woman, ensured she was the only person inside the home, and quickly assisted her to safety.

The swift actions and willingness to enter a fire to ensure the safety of occupants exemplify the dedication and professionalism of the Merrimac Police Department.

“Both officers should be commended for their courageous response,” said Chief Shears. “Thank you to everyone involved for keeping our community safe and to Jeff Strogney for making the call to 911.”
