Merrimac Police Department Investigating Fatal Crash

Chief Eric Shears reports that the Merrimac Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Saturday evening.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, Merrimac Police received a report of a pedestrian on a tricycle that was struck near his residence on Bartlett Street. The 93-year-old victim was later identified as Robert Whitcomb of Merrimac.

Whitcomb was transported to Portsmouth Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The vehicle that struck him was operated by a juvenile. The operator remained on scene and cooperated with police.

The crash remains under investigation by the Merrimac Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS) with assistance from the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

The Merrimac Police Department’s thoughts are with the victim’s family.
