Man Arrested After Threatening to Harm Merrimac Police

MERRIMAC — Chief Eric Shears reports that a man was arrested today after he threatened to do harm to members of the Merrimac Police Department.

CHESTER C. BEATRICE, AGE 75, OF MERRIMAC is charged with:

  • Assault
  • Threatening to Commit a Crime
  • Disorderly Conduct

At approximately 10:41 a.m., an officer responded to a business on East Main Street after a man had entered the store and allegedly uttered threats to commit violence against the Merrimac Police Department.

Out of an abundance of caution, the police and fire departments, which share the same building, were placed on lock down while Merrimac Police, with the assistance of Amesbury Police, initiated a search to locate the man, later identified as BEATRICE.

Amesbury Police found BEATRICE within about 10 minutes of the initial call on East Main Street. He was placed under arrest.

BEATRICE was booked and held at the Merrimac Police Station pending his arraignment at Newburyport District Court this afternoon.

“We’re extremely thankful that with the assistance of Amesbury Police we were able to quickly locate this suspect,” Chief Shears said. “I want to thank the community for their support today and assure everyone that there is no threat or danger to the public.”
